Nurses after War: The Reintegration Experience of Nurses Returning From Iraq and Afghanistan by
Based on candid interviews with 35 nurses who were deployed for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, this is the first book to reveal the stresses and moral dilemmas they experienced as they transitioned back into everyday life. The nurses share their difficulties with family separation, clinical reassignments, post-traumatic stress disorder, the perceived stigma of seeking mental health counseling, and compassion fatigue. Through personal stories of eight Vietnam veterans whose own children have served in Iraq, the film gives the audience a glimpse into family lineage and patriotism as the veterans discuss their military experience and the bond that has been created within their immediate family. In addition, themes explore the conflict servicemen and women face within and outside military service. Universal themes resonate as older servicemen and woman reflect on their own service and the thoughts they have about their children's service. Different Vietnam veterans agree and disagree with current policy; yet they all support their child's decision to enlist. Some of the interviewees discuss the myriad of emotions and challenges that parents and their children face during deployment, each with their own perspective and expectations. While it would be unfair to say that these emotions are limited to parents who have served in the military, it is reasonable to assume that those who have similar military experiences may have a stronger bond or understanding of what a military experience in a war zone is.
