Comprehensive Models of Cardiovascular and Respiratory Systems: Their Mechanical Support and Interactions
by
Marek Darowski; Gianfranco Ferrari
The aim of this book is to spread and make easier the use of comprehensive modelling for research, educational and clinical applications. Flexible and modular numerical, physical and hybrid models developed to assess patho-physiology of cardiovascular and respiratory systems are the subject of the book. The models discussed in the book are effective and easy to use tools to simulate circulatory and respiratory systems, their interactions and their mechanical support. The models can be applied to analyse data, predict the trend of selected variables not routinely measured and to identify critical variables to be monitored. Spreading of comprehensive modelling can offer to physicians and engineers powerful tools to analyse complex phenomena and interactions involving circulatory and respiratory systems along with their mechanical assistance. The complexity of the circulatory and respiratory systems makes their analysis very difficult or sometimes impossible in clinical environment.

Ultrasound Physics and Its Application in Medicine
by
Arbin Thapaliya; Alec Sithole; Michael Welsh; Gaston Dana
Ultrasound has a wide range of medical applications. Some of these include obstetrics (monitoring the progress of pregnancy), oncology (monitoring the growth of tumors), cardiology (visualizing the heart function and physiology), biopsy (guiding needles in various procedures), and physiotherapy. For example, today, an estimated 60-70% of pregnant women in the United States undergo ultrasound examination during pregnancy. An estimated 250 million fetal ultrasound examinations are performed every year in the USA. In the last few decades, ultrasound technology has expanded to medical imaging in various other specialties: Anesthesiology, Critical Care, Emergency Medicine, General Pediatrics, Internal Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology (OB-GYN), Pediatric Emergency Medicine, Physiatry, Sports Medicine, and Surgery. The increasing demand in the use of ultrasound technology in various biomedical fields points to a future in which medical professionals will be required to possess a general knowledge of ultrasound technology. While currently most medical professionals rely on technicians to perform the imaging studies, there can be a high degree of operator dependent results. Therefore, a solid foundation of the technological properties of ultrasound would give health care providers a competitive advantage in the future. This is one of the first goals of this textbook. This textbook also covers general aspects of diagnostic ultrasound providing an excellent reference for both beginners and professionals. In addition, this textbook has end-of-the-chapter experiments that will help educators conduct labs for students and any other learners to enhance their learning and solidify the practical skills. Cardiac Imaging in Clinical Practice
by
Dmitriy Kireyev; Judy Hung (Editor)
This book provides a concise guide to echocardiography, SPECT, CT and MRI, including both the basics of cardiac imaging as well as tables of normal/abnormal values and guidelines. With advances in technology, cardiac CT and MRI are becoming more popular but are often limited to larger medical centers. By including the basics of these modalities, this book provides a comprehensive guide for a wide range of medical professionals. As physicians outside of cardiology often do not have sufficient exposure to nuclear stress tests, this book contains SPECT and stress test protocols in order to facilitate decision-making when ordering tests and interpreting results. Cardiac Imaging in Clinical Practice is a quick reference guide and will be useful at multiple levels of training, enabling the book to be used as a basic and advanced reference source. As such, it is appropriate for students, residents, fellows and staff attendings who want a practical and handy reference to the diagnostic options open to them.

We will also suggest things to do to keep the heart and lungs healthy. Although the world insists that our bodies are merely the result of time and chance, as you examine the human body closely, you will see that it cannot be an accident. Contrast Echocardiography
by
Harald Becher; Andreas Helfen
This book provides a comprehensive overview of the practical aspects of contrast echocardiography. It also covers all the material in the guidelines published by the American Society of Echocardiography (ASE) in 2018 and the recommendations set out by the European Association of Cardiovascular Imaging (EACVI) in 2017. Contrast echocardiography at present is only used in 5-10% of cases, but this is expected to grow rapidly following the recommendations of the ASE and EACVI. The chapters cover the approved indications and provide practical advice on how to administer the contrast agents and how to optimize the recordings as well as how to deal with the pitfalls. The reader will find all the information on how to use contrast agents for assessment of shunts, LV volumes and function as well as myocardial diseases and masses. Detailed protocols are included for stress echocardiography and myocardial perfusion imaging. Other topics covered include the use of contrast agents for coronary sonography and transesophageal echocardiography. Contrast Echocardiography: Compendium for Clinical Practice comprehensively covers all aspects of the clinical use of contrast echocardiography and has been written by two cardiologists who share their experience from their high volume echo laboratories. One of the authors has been a member of both the ASE guidelines and EACVI recommendation writing groups. It is therefore, a critical text for echocardiographers and sonographers who perform echocardiography.

Congestive Heart Failure
by
Josias E. García; Victoro R. Wright (Editor)
Congestive heart failure (CHF) is a disease that originates from an inadequacy of the heart to maintain blood circulation, resulting in congestion and edema in the body tissues. CHF affects about five million patients in the US alone and an estimated 23 million patients worldwide, and is the only cardiac disease that is growing in prevalence, due to both increasing survival rates of myocardial infarctions and ageing population. In this book, the authors aim to uncover the many hormonal influences on myocardial function and discuss possible aetiological mechanisms, diagnostic modalities and management strategies of the Takotsubo syndrome.

Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy
by
Sardu Celestino (Editor)
Over the last few decades, cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) has been introduced as a choice treatment for heart failure (HF) patients, refractory to maximal drug therapy and left bundle branch block. Advanced heart failure is related to cardiac fibrosis, hypertrophy and apoptosis, and CRT in 30% of patients is not able to ameliorate cardiac performance and mechanical efficiency. This clear loss of effect (CRT failure) is frustrating and leaves HF patients in a steady and/or advanced, uncontrolled worsening state of clinical symptoms and NYHA class. Several hypotheses have been conducted to explain this loss of effect: investigating epigenetic (microRNAs activation pattern), echocardiography (mechanical cardiac dyssynchrony assessment), arrhythmias (atrial fibrillating patients), left ventricle lead positioning (target wall and vessel) and pacing modalities (bipolar vs multipolar), and epicardial approaches (cardiac surgery) to reach the target ventricular wall. The selection criteria, the implant technique and CRT monitoring are relevant aspects of the CRT world in all its complexity. The necessity to follow and characterize CRT recipients (responders vs non responders), and the routine follow up with recent advancements in technology (telemonitoring) may be an instrument to improve CRT response entity and clinical outcomes. The creation of a social platform (social networks) may represent a necessary and evolutionary step to share individual experiences and to exchange ideas about CRT recipients and experienced operators. The opportunity to improve CRT responders percentage may represent a gold standard and an attractive prospective in failing heart patients CRT recipients. In this book, we have investigated these aspects, hoping to provide to the reader the right reading tools in the CRT world. Our message remains: To help people suffering from cardiovascular diseases and to live better with their disease.
