Autobiography of a Teacher: A Journey toward Critical Multiculturalism Many of us do not realize the prejudices we learn by living our lives. However, through reflection we can understand who we are, why we are that way, and how we can change. As a teacher I naively believed that I had transcended prejudicial thinking and acting. Yet, through much reflection during my doctoral program, I came to understand myself from a new perspective. By revisiting my white privilege, being the other, and my place as an educator, I unfold the invisible construction of myself. This both personal and cultural autobiography challenges others to look behind the invisible veil of their own social construction of self so that new understandings are possible.
Multiculturalism and Social Justice: Two Sides of the Same Coin The development of multicultural and advocacy competencies evolved out of the multicultural and social justice movements. To help readers more fully understand the complementary nature between these 2 sets of competencies and to connect both movements, this article introduces the Multicultural and Advocacy Dimensions model. Implications are also discussed.
Critical Race Theory and the Cultural Competence Dilemma in Social Work Education. English Summary: Cultural competence is a fundamental tenet of social work education. Although cultural competence with diverse populations historically referred to individuals and groups from non-White racial origins, the term has evolved to encompass differences pertaining to sexuality, religion, ability, and others. Critics charge that the cultural competence model is largely ineffective and that its tendency to equalize oppressions under a “multicultural umbrella” unintentionally promotes a color-blind mentality that eclipses the significance of institutionalized racism. In this article we argue that critical race theory (CRT) can be used to address some of these noted problems with the cultural competence model. We define the major tenets of CRT and analyze its benefits and limitations for social work pedagogy around race, racism, and other oppressions. Reprinted by permission of the publisher.
Encouraging Conversations About Culture: Supporting Culturally Responsive Family Dispute Resolution. This report describes the second stage of research to investigate culturally responsive family dispute resolution (FDR). The research aimed to identify the perspectives of FDR professionals about what would support them to develop a culturally responsive service and practice. The research used mixed methods: a survey and interviews with professionals. The findings demonstrate a high level of selfreported cultural responsiveness by FDR professionals, and a very strong desire to extend this capacity. The strategies suggested as most useful to deepen their understanding of culture in FDR involved collaborative conversations with their colleagues and with people from culturally and linguistically diverse communities. The research identifies effective, service-centred professional development activities to support and sustain this development.
On Becoming Culturally Competent The need to be aware of diversity, to have open attitudes and perspectives toward difference, to have knowledge of other cultures and to possess the skills to navigate in multi-cultural and global settings is increasingly important in a diverse, multi-cultural, and global society. The development of cultural competence is essential for working effectively in the world today. Cultural competence is a developmental process of transformation of self that is not easy, quick or intuitive. This paper discusses one journey toward developing cultural competence.
Multicultural and Social Justice Counseling Competencies: Guidelines for the Counseling Profession. In 2014, the Association for Multicultural Counseling and Development (AMCD) appointed a committee to revise the Multicultural Counseling Competencies developed by Sue, Arredondo, and McDavis in and operationalized by Arredondo et al. in. This article reflects the updated competencies, titled the Multicultural and Social Justice Counseling Competencies (MSJCC; Ratts, Singh, Nassar‐McMillan, Butler, & McCullough, ), which were endorsed by AMCD on June 29, 2015, and by the American Counseling Association on July 20, 2015. A conceptual framework of the MSJCC visually depicts the relationships among the competencies' key constructs: multicultural and social justice praxis, quadrants, domains, and competencies. Implications are discussed.
Education Abroad and Domestic Cultural Immersion: A Comparative Study of Cultural Competence Among Teacher Candidates. As the demographics of the United States continue to shift, American classrooms reflect the richness of cultural diversity and the vibrancy of immigrant populations. Education abroad programs provide opportunities for preservice teachers to develop their cultural competence, required for effectively teaching children from a range of cultural backgrounds. Given the financial demands of study abroad programs, researchers have also examined domestic cultural immersion experiences. There is a lack of research that compares education abroad with domestic cultural immersion. This study contributes to the literature by comparing preservice teachers' responses to two cultural immersion experiences that are closely aligned both in content and in pedagogy, one in Israel and the other in a domestic setting.
Student Voice and Participation in Intercultural Education This paper presents a multi-case study in the field of intercultural education and it refers to a project named "Voice of children and young people in the development of intercultural education." The cases are critical action-research projects developed with three groups of middle and high school students. They participated in dialogic processes and shared leadership with their teachers. They co-designed projects, debated and became aware of critical issues related to cultural diversity in their educational communities. The purpose of the research is to analyze participatory processes and associated changes in relation to intercultural education and students' voice frameworks. Personal changes of the students, such as self-awareness and attention to others and to relationships, and group changes such as cohesion, were underlined, as well as changes extended to other actors--teachers, other students, staff, tutors, and other members of the community--creating collaborative relationships, solidarity, and mutual recognition. There were visible changes during the most active period in which projects were held, but sometimes impacts still endured and deepened afterwards. This stresses the relevance of youngsters' participatory projects engaged in intercultural processes and change.
Enhancing Strengths-based Social Work Pedagogy: From Cultural Competence to Critical Race Theory. This article analyzes the methods used to promote critical thinking and social justice-informed practice in graduate social work programs. Current models that dominate social work education engender challenges for students grappling with complexities of social justice, intersectionality, power, and privilege. Drawing from data obtained through mini focus groups held with MSW students at a public university, the authors endorse the implementation of a Critical Race Theory (CRT) model to provide a framework for concurrent diversity education and critical analysis of dominant ideology. The authors posit that utilizing a CRT model renovates social work pedagogy to a more strengths-based approach that provides a framework for both conceptual understanding and practical application of intersectionality concepts. Cultural and Communicative Competence in the Caring Relationship with Patients from Another Culture. The global and multicultural society of today creates challenges that require multicultural competence among individuals, especially within caring contexts. Aims and objectives This study assumes an intercultural perspective, and the aim is to uncover a new understanding of the caring community between nurses and patients when these do not speak the same language. The research question is: What is the significance of communication in a caring community when nurses and patients do not speak the same language? Methodological design and method This qualitative study uses a hermeneutical approach. The material was collected through questionnaires with eight nurses and two adults from another culture. The texts were analysed through latent content analysis. Ethical issues and approval Study participation, data storage and handling for research purposes were approved by the participants when they provided their informed consent. Permission to conduct the study was granted by an ethical committee of a hospital organisation. Results Human love is the basis for a caring relationship since it reaches beyond the limits of cultural differences. Integrity is vital for cultural respect and especially for the consideration of spiritual needs in the caring relationship. An affirming presence is essential for communion. Creative courage is fundamental for communication, and continuous information is vital for establishing trust within the caring relationship. Study limitations One limitation to this study might be the limited number of participants (ten). Conclusions Caring for a patient from another culture requires that nurses are open-minded and have the courage to encounter new challenges. It is essential for nurses to respect the patient's integrity but also to acquire knowledge in order to improve their cultural competence. Further research within this area should focus on the role of next of kin in intercultural caring and on how leadership may contribute to improving cultural competence within health organisations.
Cultural Minority Students' Experiences with Intercultural Competency in Medical Education. Education activities intended to transfer intercultural knowledge, address personal prejudice and stimulate intercultural sensitivity were perceived as stigmatising and as creating an unsafe climate for cultural minority students. Cultural minority and majority students on campus seemed segregated and the intercultural awareness of minority students was not integrated in intercultural competence activities. Conclusions As cultural minority students were confronted with microaggressions, the medical school did not succeed in creating a safe education environment for all students. Contrary to their aims and intentions, intercultural competence activities had limited effect and seemed to support the polarisation of cultural minority and majority students and teachers. This can be seen as pointing towards a hidden curriculum privileging majority over minority students. For structural integration of intercultural competency in medical education, the focus must penetrate beyond curricular activities towards the critical addressing of the culture and structure of medical school. Collective commitment to creating a safe and inclusive education climate is vital. This requires fostering social cohesion between minority and majority students and teachers, raising awareness and the practice by all involved of critical (self-)reflexivity on cultural prejudice and dominant, exclusionary norms in academic medicine.

Improving LGBT Cultural Competence in Nursing Students: An Integrative Review. This study was done to synthesize current evidence in determining the best practice for improving the cultural competence of undergraduate nursing students towards the LGBT population. This integrative review included a systematic literature search of 12 databases. The analysis revealed a total of 14 resources to be of the highest level and quality. It was concluded that a multi-method approach including formal educational strategies, contact with LGBT individuals and interactive experiences may best improve nursing students' LGBT cultural competence.

Cultural Competence: A Guide for Nursing Students. In any confrontational dispute embracing the political one, the speaker has to embrace a specific style including speech acts as well as many different stylistic devices at all levels of expression (syntax, morphology, phonology, and semantics). The paper reveals that Trump speeches witness the presence of altered techniques devoted to coax the audience in a certain idea .However , repetition technique is more prominent than others as it is a good device for achieving not only persuasion but also illumination, prominence, warning, making a point memorable ,and creating cohesion in the discourse . "Just treat everybody with respect": Health Service Providers' Perspectives on the Role of Cultural Competence in Community Health Service Provision. This paper explores the multi-level aspects of cultural competence from the perspectives of healthcare service providers in the community health context. Qualitative interviews were conducted with staff (n=14) from a community health service in Australia. Findings showed that most participants had an adequate understanding of cultural competence and viewed it as an important aspect of their work. In general, participants aimed to take a client-centred approach rather than trying to achieve cultural expertise. Difficulties with language, communication and organizational processes were identified as potential barriers to service provision. This study furthers the understanding of the challenges of culturally competent practice.
Cross-cultural Care Encounters in Paediatric Care: Minority Ethnic Parents' Experiences. Because of worldwide migration, the healthcare staff in general as well as in paedi"atric care specifically is challenged increasingly by people from various ethnic backgrounds. The challenge is related to providing culturally competent care and effectively communicating with people from diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds who have different health beliefs, practices, values and languages. This also applies to the Swedish society and to Swedish paediatric care. Aim The purpose of this study was to describe the expectations and experiences of cross-cultural care encounters among minority ethnic parents in Swedish paediatric care. Method A qualitative design was used in the study. Data were collected using semi-structured interviews between October 2011 and March 2012. The sample consisted of 12 parents of minority ethnic backgrounds who had their child in a ward at a children's hospital in the Stockholm County Council. The interviews were analysed using manifest content analysis. Ethical considerations The Regional Ethical Review Committee approved the study (Ref: Nr: 2011/927-31/5). Results The analysis of the interviews led to three categories: fundamentals in nursing, cultural sensitivity and understanding, and influencing conditions. Conclusions Generic knowledge and skills of nurses outweighed the need for the nurses to have culture-specific knowledge of their patients or relatives in cross-cultural care encounters. Language skills and the availability of bilingual nurses in a multi-ethnic society can facilitate communication and increase parents' satisfaction in cross-cultural care encounters.
Cultural Competence in the Community Health Context: 'we don't have to reinvent the wheel'. Health and social service agencies need to be responsive to the healthcare requirements of culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) groups in the community. This is a challenging proposition, particularly due to shifting demographics in developed Western countries such as Australia. Organisations that strive for cultural competence can potentially reduce the barriers associated with inequitable access to services by CALD groups. Community health services play a vital role in the provision of culturally competent health services to people from CALD groups. Additional research related to cultural competence in the community health context is needed. Thus, the aim of this paper is to explore the positioning of cultural competence within community health from multiple perspectives using a qualitative case study of a community health service located in Victoria, Australia. The findings suggest that if the essential needs of clients are met, regardless of cultural background (e.g. able to communicate with staff, trust and a respectful and caring environment), then issues related to cultural background may be of less significance for some clients.
Cultural Competence in Palliative Care and a World of Multiculturalism. The article deals with the growing importance of cultural competence in palliative care in an era of multiculturalism in Great Britain. It cites the need for community nurses to understand cultural differences for them to effectively provide culturally-sensitive care for each patient. It also calls on community nurses to ask patients directly what matters most to them.
The challenge of cultural competence in the workplace: perspectives of healthcare providers Background Cross-cultural educational initiatives for professionals are now commonplace across a variety of sectors including health care. A growing number of studies have attempted to explore the utility of such initiatives on workplace behaviors and client outcomes. Yet few studies have explored how professionals perceive cross-cultural educational models (e.g., cultural awareness, cultural competence) and the extent to which they (and their organizations) execute the principles in practice. In response, this study aimed to explore the general perspectives of health care professionals on culturally competent care, their experiences working with multi-cultural patients, their own levels of cultural competence and the extent to which they believe their workplaces address cross-cultural challenges. Methods The perspectives and experiences of a sample of 56 health care professionals across several health care systems from a Mid-Western state in the United States were sourced via a 19-item questionnaire. The questionnaire comprised both open-ended questions and multiple choice items. Percentages across participant responses were calculated for multiple choice items. A thematic analysis of open-ended responses was undertaken to identify dominant themes. Results Participants largely expressed confidence in their ability to meet the needs of multi-cultural clientele despite almost half the sample not having undergone formal cross-cultural training. The majority of the sample appeared to view cross-cultural education from a 'cultural awareness' perspective - effective cross-cultural care was often defined in terms of possessing useful cultural knowledge (e.g., norms and customs) and facilitating communication (the use of interpreters); in other words, from an immediate practical standpoint. The principles of systemic cross-cultural approaches (e.g., cultural competence, cultural safety) such as a recognition of racism, power imbalances, entrenched majority culture biases and the need for self-reflexivity (awareness of one's own prejudices) were scarcely acknowledged by study participants. Conclusions Findings indicate a need for interventions that acknowledge the value of cultural awareness-based approaches, while also exploring the utility of more comprehensive cultural competence and safety approaches.
