Welcome to the Preparing for the Florida Civic Literacy Examination Library Guide! This guide provides information about FSCJ's Civic Literacy competency exam as well as resources to help you study for the exam. More detailed information about the exam can be found through FSCJ's Office of Assessment and Certification.

Civic Literacy requirement applies to the following students:

2018-2019 through 2020-2021	First-time-in-college students	Associate of Arts (A.A.), Baccalaureate	Pass a course OR Pass an assessment
2021-2022 and after	Students initially entering Florida College System (FCS) under 2021-22 catalog year	Associate of Arts (A.A.) Baccalaureate	Pass a course AND Pass an assessment
2022-2023 and after*	Students initially entering FCS under 2022-23 catalog year	Associate in Science (A.S.) Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S)	Pass a course AND Pass an assessment

*The FDOE anticipates entering into rule development to add the Civic Literacy requirement as a condition of A.S. degree completion coinciding with general education changes specified in HB 1507

Competency Requirements Options

Ways to fulfill the Florida Literacy requirement:

Successful completion of either:
1. POSX041 American Government; or
2. AMHX020 Introductory Survey Since 1877; or
3. AMHX010 Introductory Survey to 1877.

AND achieving the standard score on one of the following assessments:
- A minimum score of 60% (48/80) on the FCLE or
- A minimum score of 50 on the History of the United States I CLEP exam ($) or
- A minimum score of 50 on the American Government CLEP exam ($) or
- A minimum score of 4 on the AP United States History exam or
- A minimum score of 3 on the AP Government and Politics: United States exam

FSCJ Civic Literacy Courses

AMH 2020: United States History From 1877 to Present
This course includes the growth of big business, the Agrarian Revolt, Latin American affairs, the progressive movement, the 1920s, World War I, the Great Depression, World War II, the Cold War, minority rights, and civil liberties.
POS 2041: American Federal Government
This course surveys the background, constitutional principles, organizations, and operation of the American political system. Topics include the U.S. Constitution, federalism, civil liberties, civil rights, political parties, interest groups, political campaigns, voting rights/behavior, elections, the presidency, bureaucracy, Congress, and the American judicial system. On completion, students should be able to identify and explain relationships among the basic elements of American government and function as more informed participants of the American political system.
AMH 2010: United States History Survey to 1877
This course examines the development of the United States from its colonial origins to the end of Reconstruction.
