REL 2000: Religion in the Humanities

Introduction to the fundamental concepts of the study of religion.

Religion in the Humanities explores both what religion is made of and how it works. The course examines the function of religion—how scholars have explained the roles religion has played throughout human history as well as the key elements that make up religion, such as texts, symbols, rituals, institutions, and art, and how these shape beliefs and practices in different cultures. The course will focus on a wide variety of religious expressions, including global traditions, indigenous beliefs, mainstream practices, and alternative spiritual paths.
