LibGuide Design Basics: Classification and Naming

This guide provides tips and resources to FSCJ librarians create LibGuides.

URL Descriptions

When designing your guides, select appropriate URLs, Type/Group, and Subjects before publishing.  A friendly and meaningful URL will make it easier for users to find or type in your guide directly.  

Refer to the subject tab in this guide to see a list of approved subjects. The information below will help to standardize titles and guide types. 

Course Guides

Course Guides

Must relate to a specific course. 

Should focus more generally on specific topics or course needs/assignments.

Should clearly point users to the liaison librarian responsible for assisting this course.

Must follow the naming format below.

Examples:

  • AMH 2020: U.S. History for 1865 to Present
  • POS 2041: American Federal Government
  • ​ENC 1102: Writing About Texts

Subject Guides

Subject Guides

Relate to an academic program or research topic.

Should broadly focus on resources for users in this area of study.

Should clearly point users to the liaison librarian responsible for this subject area.

Examples:

  • Financial Services (B.S.)
  • Nursing (B.S.N)
  • Interior Design (A.S.)
  • Digital Media (B.A.S.)

General Purpose Guides

General Purpose Guides

These guides cover research concepts and skills that are relevant to all students.

Examples:

  • Library Collections 
  • Policies
  • Tutoring Resources
  • Veteran's Resources

Class Guides

Class Guides

Must be designed for a specific professor. 

Should focus more narrowly on specific topics or course needs/assignments.

Should clearly point users to the liaison librarian responsible for assisting this course.

Must follow the naming format to the below.

Examples:

  • Class Guide: ENC 1101 (Smith)
  • Class Guide: LIT 2000 (Doe)
  • Class Guide: LIS 1000 (Dew)

Topic Guides

Topic Guides

These guides promote college programs or events.

Examples:

  • Banned Books Week Information and Resources
  • Open Educational Resources and Learning Objects
  • Human Rights
  • LGBT
