Canvas and Library Content

This guide will help faculty find resources about the Canvas migration and how to link to library content within their Canvas course.

Integrating Library Reading Lists in Canvas

  • Ebsco, Proquest, and Gale databases: Most online library content is available using these three apps
  • If you have content not available in one of these database apps (for example: O'Reilly ebooks, JSTOR content, Infobase), we recommend that you use library catalog permalink.

How to Integrate Library Content

Ebsco Canvas App

The Ebsco Canvas App allows faculty to search approximately 30 Ebsco databases for full-text library content.  Journals and eBooks can be integrated into course modules.

  1. Select the + sign within the module
  2. Choose External Tool
  3. Select Ebsco Library
  4. Search for a specific title or keywords
  5. Add the content by select the +ADD option

Proquest Canvas App

The Proquest Canvas App allows faculty to search all 9 of the Proquest databases for full-text library content.  Journals and eBooks can be integrated into course modules.

  1. Select the + sign within the module
  2. Choose External Tool
  3. Select Proquest Library Resources
  4. Search for a specific title or keywords
  5. Chose the Select this Document button to add to your course

Gale Academic OneFile

The Gale Academic OneFile tool allows faculty to search this general Gale databases for full-text library content.  Journals and eBooks can be integrated into course modules.

  1. Select the + sign within the module or place within a Page
  2. Choose Page, Name the Page, and Edit
  3. Locate Gale Academic OneFile in the rich text editor menu under the Plug icon for more apps
  4. Search for a specific title or keywords
  5. Chose the Embed Document button to add to your course

Using Library Permalinks - Library Catalog

If you have library resources from a database that is not available as a Canvas App, you'll need to copy the permalink from the library catalog record. Permalinks are intended to be a persistent link and should not change.  However, we advise that you check your library content links before each term. 

  1. Search for your document or book in the FSCJ library catalog
  2. Under the title you'll see a chain link icon stating Permalink which will provide you the permalink URL
  3. Or you can select the title to open the full catalog record. From there you have an option of Send To and Permalink
  4. Copy and paste this link into your course

Back up your Library OneSearch content

For those of you who use the Library OneSearch reading list tool, we recommend that you copy your reading lists before we lose access on September 30, 2021.

  1. Navigate to your Library OneSearch Reading List
  2. Select See Current Reading List
  3. Choose Copy- and Print-Friendly View
  4. Select Copy to Clipboard
  5. Paste into a document
