On the Street: Photographs of Asia

Curator’s Statement

Mark Sablow, FSCJ Professor of Photography

In the beginning of my travels to Asia, my main interest was photographing historic sites, like the many Buddhist temples in southeast Asia, but with each visit my interest grew at the day to day moments I witnessed.

I realized a great opportunity existed for my photography, and it involved starting to do what many photographers call street photography.  It is a genre of photography that is difficult to define. It may or may not involve people.  If people are present, they may or may not be posing for photographer, so an image could be candid or a posed portrait.  Street photography does not have to be on street…

What street photography shares is a view of a moment that attempts to tell us something about person or a culture, or a place… It may be a graceful moment or it may be an awkward moment.  Simply put, street photography allows the viewer to see moments of life through the eyes of others.

This exhibition provides views from ten different photographers, each with a unique view of the  world around them. You can see more photographs by these artists on their Instagram accounts.
