In 2015 retired professor Eleanor Allen gifted 45 paintings and drawings to the College, creating the largest collection of works by one artist owned by FSCJ.
The collection primarily consists of large-scale figurative and landscape paintings of the artist’s travels in Ireland, Italy, Greece and Turkey. Vibrantly hued abstracts, experimental canvas groupings including free standing canvases are also featured.
Allen, a native of Atlanta, Georgia studied there privately and at the High Museum. She earned a B.A. in art history and painting from William and Mary and a B.F.A. in painting from George Washington University. She has studied with Karle Zerbe at Florida State University and Robert Brackmann of the Art Students’ League. She has exhibited at the Kottler Gallery in New York, the High Museum in Atlanta, and extensively along the East Coast.
Allen taught in Virginia before coming to FSCJ, where she started the art department with professors Ron Wetherell and Derby Ulloa in 1966. She taught painting, drawing and art history at FSCJ for 35 years, influencing generations of students in the Jacksonville community.
