FSCJ Art Galleries: From Pavement to Press

A digital rendition of FSCJ's art galleries.

From Pavement to Press

In 2011, printmaking instructor Patrick Miko organized From Pavement to Press, a print portfolio trade that included his students as well as several guest artists visiting for Blocktoberfest, FSCJ’s annual printmakiing festival. Special guests included Joseph Velasquez and John Hancock of Drive-By Press, John Hitchcock, Professor and Associate Dean of the Arts at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Emily Arthur, Assistant Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and Mark McCombs, Founder of Renaissance Jax, Inc.

Print portfolios are common within the community of printmakers as a way to share and receive artwork from other artists.  Each printmaker creates an edition of prints with certain design parameters – size and number of copies are always specified, but sometimes printing process or theme are also addressed.  The edition is then shared with all participating artists and the host organization so that each has a portfolio of the entire collection. Sometimes if there are many participants, each artist may only get a sampling of prints equal to the number they contributed.

In Relief print processes the artist cuts away areas not requiring to be printed from a smooth wood, metal, or plastic surface, leaving raised portions which are then inked before the print is taken.
